why? why did you feel the need to freeze the train? why wouldn't you keep it motion blurred? are you retarded? are you trying to produce clinical images?

A well executed clinical photo is better than a nophoto.
Anonymous No.4472790 [Report] >>4472793
>>4472758
Half of everything is luck. A better time of day coinciding with a train pass. A clear sky to accentuate the reflection on the water. There are also things that are out of your control, e.g. the wall being too high and covering up a large portion of the train, the cement truck and runners in the photograph who distract. I tried pulling in attention to the train cockpit, but you can see how the runner and truck distract from it. I would re-visit the location and try to snipe out a view point more to the right to try and shoot a more "oncoming" viewpoint of a train—this is the sort of in-situ solution you must consider when you get to a photoshoot site and realize, for example, that the wall is too big and will cover up the subject (in this case, the train).
The photo you provided is more of a clinical, historical snapshot of a moment in time at a regular ol' place. No singular focus, horizon line is right down the middle, not quite symmetrical enough to stand on its own. No foreground-to-background differentiation, the focus here is just "look, a view of outside," like it might as well just be the view from an office window. You must think of something, and try your best to accentuate it and give it a soul, so to speak
Anonymous No.4472791 [Report] >>4472793
>>4472758
its nice and sharpm, the symmetry in the reflection is always cool but it looks a bit off for some reason.
the river provides natural leading lines to draw your eye toward the centre of the image but your subject (the front carriage) is off to the right.

it feels very gray and the ligthing is pretty meh so come back and retry at a different time.

there is a lot of negative space in the image which some people like but i think this just isnt the picture for it.

try playing around with crop and grid lines turned on and see what different framing you can get from it, maybe different aspect ratios will help.

it wont be the best picture but it should be enlightening.

Personally, its a cool idea for a picture but like you said what you're imagining isn't what comes out when you capture the photons, keep practicing and you'll get there, i find cropping pics really helps you see framing that is already there but you couldn't see at the moment in time

sweet lighting. i like how a side of the skirt is lit and there are some faint highlights here and there, making it an almost-silhouette. framing feels a bit awkward, like it should have been either wider to get the whole skirt or tighter to center the contrast

Focus is a long and ongoing problem due to the wavelength shift, for which I compensate, the narrow DoF of 4x5, and the models never staying still. I've got some tests in the pipeline to dev and I hope I can fix it soon.

A good story, as a good photograph should be, does never reveal itself too quickly. It's like a well composed piece of music. It gets your attention, leads you somewhere, maybe elsewhere, maybe gets back, and then reveals itself. You have to take a small journey to understand it, maybe take several turns to it. If it is too blunt it may loses its point. Except for Punk.

And I wish I could specificaly point out, what the bluntness is (for a lack of a better word, I don't mean it harshly), that I felt in those two photos, but I can not really bring it into words. It feels like manipulation, but manipulation is subtle.
All the best for your future work.

I rly like 24mm on APS-C size sensors but there's very few primes available for K-mount
I could get the Sigma ART 24mm prime but it seems pointless given I already have the (much heavier) 18-35mm ART

wait, in this one the highlights are fine
u would probably benefit from making curve adjustments instead of whatever you did here >>4473973 (exposure slider adjustment?)
since with curves you can anchor the highlights and still raise the shadows

Indeed, this is a very high contrast scene, they are different photos. I have a handful of shots for this scene. For the first image I specifically shot it to avoid blowing the highlights, but it yields quite washed-out dark areas when I brighten them (especially the trees in the background). I tried to go for a rather dark/high contrast version which I actually liked, could use some lightening though.
The second one I focused more on the foreground and accepted to have these blown highlights. I like the foreground better but as you wrote, the sky kinda bothers me.
I even tried a hdr with two photos but hdr being what it is, the result through LR doesn't look good, I'll try with picturenaut it could be decent. I already make different adjustments between the sky and the rest through masking in my regular shots (lower the highlights in the sky, and increase luminosity on the ground/increase the whites basically).

tldr there's no winning or I'm just not good enough at processing kek. I recognized it was a pretty good scene so I'd like to get it right. Here's a third one which is kind of a middle ground. Thank you for your input btw

>it yields quite washed-out dark areas when I brighten them
yeah true I don't like that about bringing up the shadows in post but since I don't know a better way to capture HDR scenes I sorta just cope with it lmao
I've never tried bracketing, could be helpful for this type of photography.

I actually used hdr unironically quite a bit, back in the days when the sensors weren't that great. Since I got a D750 I don't need it for 99% of shots so I lost a bit of my know-how for these, but one of the keys is to avoid being memed by "pro" software using local adjustment algorithms that mostly suck and give the grungy look.

I think it's worth trying bracketing in these situations, worst case scenario you just don't use the images. Producing decent hdr images takes a bit of know-how and investment in learning though, since most out of the box solutions and tutorials give trashy results.

I mostly use Picturenaut for this which is a great free software actually developed by Christian Bloch, a guy from the VFX industry iirc, unfortunately its development has been dead for a while now but it still works great. The software is mostly aiming at natural look through global tonemappers (so a bit like LR's highlights and shadows sliders) and it's probably the fastest. Still needs some further adjustments with ps most of the time though. I also sometimes try LR's hdr module just because it's integrated within LR and I'm lazy, but it's slightly worse most of the time.

Here's an hdr attempt with picturenaut using 2 handheld photos, I only increased the foreground's contrast in ps afterwards. I'll stop spamming my scene now kek

I think this is a nice direction but it would definitely benefit from blurred edges, I think it would enhance the “illustrative” effect.

I just saw the way you’ve blended the neck with the white background. If the entire image was blended into the background that way, I think it would be a great artistic effect. Also, since it’s supposed to look “illustrative,” I think, sharpness is working against you. Softness could improve the aesthetic quality of the image.
