Iran wasn't pursuing a nuclear weapon. They only wanted the ability to build nukes in case it turned out they need then. As it did turn out, they do need nukes. At this point, I can't say I blame them if they go ahead and build nukes.

Obama negotiated a deal with Iran that would've ensured Iran didn't build nukes. Then Trump pulled out of that deal so he could impose his "maximum pressure" sanctions to try to topple the Iranian government. It's clear that, for Republicans, it's not about the nukes; they want regime change in Iran.
