The problem is that Christianity is extremely universalist. There is one God with which everyone has the exact same relationship.
Now technically, even pagan religions are universalist if you think about the theology at all. The Gods are not literally limited to the one people who worship them under a certain set of names. Jupiter is everyone's God in the same way that the Christian God is. But these polytheistic religions do offer greater leeway for ethno-nationalism in that they recognize that not all people have the same relationship with all the Gods. The most obvious expression of this was city states having patron deities with which they considered themselves to have a special relationship.
And so even if the whole world were to practice the same core religion, nations could still justify fighting to preserve their own distinct people and culture out of devotion to the God or Gods to which they held particular affinity.
