If you think about it most soldiers, sailors, brave men came from the UK island. It's not very big. And it was their most chad men their most handsome their most able.

And yet we were a major power for hundreds of years and the sole superpower for a century. We ran India with a handful of bureaucrats and an army mainly comprised of native troops. The Navy was key: it enabled us to control trade and (relatively) quickly move our limited number of soldiers to wherever they were needed. "The British Army is a projectile to be fired by the Navy", as Jackie Fisher said. I will grant you that we didn't have enough soldiers to deal with the French *and* hold onto America.

I go to London every 4-5 years to visit family. Place seems significantly browner every time I return. Country towns still seem nice though.
