Probably the main downside of golf is that it requires so much space, even a 9-hole course is several times the land use of a horse track even. I'm pretty sure even Nascar fits in a smaller footprint than any course.

It's kinda perfect for suburbanites though. You can play it at every age, it demands patience with moments of high pressure, there's skill but it's different every time, and you have to spend a lot of money on equipment that you can nerd out about. Plus you can drink while you do it.

My experience is that they're usually built on the outskirts of a city and will sometimes continue existing even as the city grows in around them. The older courses are always closer to city center, while newer courses are out near the most recent suburban developments.

So no, I think they mostly get built on either undeveloped land or farm land that they buy off the farmer (same way most suburbs get built).

If we need more housing we should just build more condos in urban centers. What we really need is more entry-level housing and that's what that is. Condos are always cheaper than houses, the upkeep isn't as hard, they're good enough for starter families up until baby number 2, and if they're in the city they're close to all the job opportunities. Just makes life easier and it's still an asset that gets you on the property ladder. There's plenty of bloodsucking developers making apartment complexes that way right now, just give them a tax incentive or something to structure them as condos instead and let young people get access to an asset. Building housing on top of golf courses is more to spite the golf course than to help anyone make it in this life.
