Russia is fighting war this way because they will permanently take control over it - they need to fully clean it up; the men that could do guerilla later on need to die.and be killed. After they take some village, there's either no one left there or there's some grandmas and grandpas left or there's no.more village at all.
If you did the same in afgabistan, you might actually still hold and control it, you got a quick win, but then got stuck for a decade and lost it in a week, isn't it better to fight for a decade and then being abel to hold it without military presence?
Also, russians are very sistematic and save as many lives of their soldiers as they can, with ocassional fuck ups. They fuck up the place they'll attack first in a rough way usually, with big bangs like fabs, tos, cluster ammo, arty, then they do precise strikes on the place with arty and drones, then shen they feel the place is cleaned up they send in few soldiers to take the place. Ukrainians keep feeding new soldiers into places that get attacked and usually whenever you see russian soldier raise a flag in some settlement, the whole settlement is completely fucked up, like almost each building. But that just tells you how much effort russia puts into cleaning the place up before sending in infantry. It takes a lot of time, a lot of recon.
Yes, they could do it a lot faster, but they are saving on ammo too and being rational. There's not enough ammo in the world to destroy hundreds of this villages faster.
And who are you even going to bomb if everyone's just hidden in basements and under ground and barely dare to go take a shit outside.
