Why won't they just make military service mandatory in the United States?

The entire purpose of MEPS is to screen out applicants from the Armed Forces because the vast majority of Americans are disqualified for medical reasons to begin with.

It's easier just to make everyone broke first

unless our system transforms for the better, mandatory military service will become inevitable for our nation to survive. It probably won't be entirely enforced and there'd be ways to become exempt, but in the event there's a societal and economic breakdown, we'd require an institution to preserve national security, and the military is the best option we have. Honestly, it wouldn't be that bad. If public schools and leftist university researchers were replaced with disciplined military-trained Americans, public education would be restored and technological and medical progress would increase.

The military doesn't make you disciplined, a huge amount of vets are homeless. I don’t know where this meme comes from (movies most likely) but it's ridiculous. Most come out of the service as undisciplined slobs with substance abuse issues. Going to the army to learn discipline is like sending your teenage virgin son to prison to learn about sex.

that wasn't always the case, and it's a recent phenomenon. The military as it exists also needs to be reformed, but it's probably the best institution we have, unless we start something from scratch. At least the funding is already there.

I think alot of people would benifit from some degree of training especially when their in their teens. If my country promised me a plot of land to enlist for 10 years i wouldnt have an issue
