If everyone equally has the ability to fully control their mind, then I and everyone else (like the person in constant pain or living in a horrid environment) should be able to learn this rather quickly. I don't think this is the case. While there is still a lot of room for me to try personally, aren't there monks and practitioners who try to train for this stuff their entire lifetime? The tibetans do a lot of visceral mindstuff. But if it were so easy and natural, why does it take so much from a human to reach this state?

That's okay, everyone learns at their own pace. In my experience, the people who live in a horrible environment are the ones who grow towards this realization the fastest. I attribute my own current happiness to the abusive household I grew up in. Now I look back on it with gratitude rather than resentment, because since then I've realized that all suffering is actually an opportunity to grow in wisdom, by logical necessity. If wisdom were already complete in that area, then there would be no cause for suffering in the first place.

Part of the difficulty is modern education. It doesn't teach people to think critically or instruct them in virtue at all anymore, so the idea that there's a higher truth out there to even strive for is totally hidden from us most of our lives. It's also a journey of desires conquered rather than a journey of steps, so how long it takes depends a lot on the person and how serious they are about putting in the effort. For me, I'd say the journey took around 10 years to really bear fruit, which isn't that long all things considered.
