you can make the same comparison with the cost of food/housing/clothing or wages going back as far as you can find records of it. outside of brief anomalous time periods, major war or famine, etc, the value of gold has been entirely static. a wage of one ounce of gold per month has always been about median income in decent societies. Right now is an anomaly to that rule, median income is 92% of an ounce of gold.
