Yes, this whole century, the whole third millennium in fact, has been a downhill ride for the US, the West, and much of the world.
The 20th century turned out to be about progress and life getting better, after the century's rough start. People in the latter 20th century had a lot of hope.
The events of this new century have killed that hopeful mindset and replaced it with a bleak nihilism.

And some drug overdoses are almost certainly intentional suicides, though, of course, there is no way to know in each individual case, unless the person leaves a suicide note.

If so, how can any Catholic support suicide? Christ teaches that his followers must save as many souls as possible through proselytism. Evidently, if a Catholic can encourage or support suicide while also believing the person goes straight to hell, then Catholics really aren't followers of Christ.
