PTSD is a WESTERN phenomenon and it first made its appearence in Vietnam. PTSD was actually HIGHER in the Gulf War than it was in Vietnam even though Gulf was a much shorter operation. My grandfather was an orphan at 13, survived the great depression, then was pulled into the world war and was in the military for 9 years. He fought in the Albanian mountains (we're Greek), he fought in Greece, he fought in Cairo etc. The casualties he witnessed were at a far greater scale than either of the two wars mentioned not to mention the shortage of equipment. My grampa used to wake up in the morning, strip naked and rub snow all over his body to warm up and then would get dressed and go fight. Half the people wouldn't wake up the next day. How come he didn't get PTSD ? Something has obviously changed. I'd recommend you anons look in this direction instead of just casually regurgitating poppsych. The people who join the military in combat related roles where people get PTSD outside of big generational wars (WW1 or WW2) are usually mentally weak to begin with.

They come from abusive home situations with drug addict or simply insane parents, they think that the military will help them 'find themselves' because they are lost in life (think any alpha male coaching bullshit here), they are simply insane and want to kill people legally or they are people who have been through the system and think that it's their last chance to redeem themselves.

Throw someone like that into training where weakness is basically a target for not on the the instructors but other trainees then combat after that which basically requires people to internalize everything that is going on in their mind to be able to function.

These people come home like grenades ready to go off. Typically this happens when they realize that people who never served are ahead of them in life and no on really gives a shit about their military adventures- they aren't treated as 'heroes' that the military tries to convince them that they will be seen as.

These people were never well adjusted to begin with they were always going to be fucked up. PTSD is just the label on it.

These are usually only the combat roles in the macho units. The regular support roles are completely different and people don't have these problems.
