I've been coming to /pol/ at least weekly since 2011. To say that the board has gone downhill since then would be an understatement. What happened to this board is the same thing that happened to the rest of the Internet: it went from a place for middle-class white people to a place for dumb brown third worlders. Three factors that occurred around the same time, the introduction of captcha, the wait timer to post, and Twitter being purchased by Elon.

Likewise it was a place to discuss things, joke about things, etc and not worry about your public image potentially being tarnished.

These days, people will say the absolute dumbest bullshit and say it on their personal online profiles with their more recent photos attached to them. Primarily because the goal now is monetization for them. Even if 80% of their followers are bots, the 80/20 rule kicks in because that 20% who aren't bots and shills will bolster them to being able to have soft income, podcasts and things like that.
