I work in tech, my company has been laying off employees in the US and Canada while hiring a bunch on our team in India. It's pretty obvious what's happening.

Basically there's not less jobs, it's just the jobs are going to Indians. AI is barely a factor, maybe in a couple years but it's still not at a point where it's replacing engineers

The only way for a semi intelligent person to guarantee their job is to get into something that cannot legally be automated like nuclear energy, or begin working in automation, either AI or robotics. I mean if you're a plumber, start training an AI and a robot to do the work because that's where it will be in 10-20 years anyways.

Its more like that these companies over hired during the corona and they have become stagnant companies that are desperate to find some new growth oportunities. Some of them went all in AI in belief that it would bring growth, ofcourse that is not yet happening. But as they are stagnant and they still need to show the illusion of progress to investors, they starts to layoff people to reduce costs to make profit go up, for now.

Also they are pivoting from some stagnant products to more profitable ones so they are laying of the old force and hiring indians for some mainetance things. Example microsoft is focusing more on azure, their OS has become kind of stagnant and xbox is not bringing in money, so they are getting the axe.
