I think the answer is socialized health care and longer life spans. Tobacco is a drug that helps people work harderr - like caffeine it was seen as useful to society. When it was found to be linked to cancer this did not matter at first because people got cancer when they were older and approaching or past their retirement age. It was actually helpful that these people died sooner. But now with socialized medicine and insurance everybody ends up paying for tobacco caused illness. So its like I dont care if my neighbor smokes unless I have to pay his hospital bills through higher taxes or insurance rates.

Taking a nicotine patch every day for a week when I had never smoked before should have made me addicted. But it didn't.
