I think Linux is overall better for everything though if you know how to use it
Never really understood the hate for systemd, so I'd just use a minimal net install of Arch, that way I get to decide what all the programs I want on my computer are and it's not bloated with shit. Minimal net install of Debian is also nice, pretty much the same thing as Arch except the package management is different.
Vim for text editing
I think I used XFCE desktop environment because it's lightweight and pretty intuitive and minimal. My second choice would be KDE

I don't have a solution for you, but it's the same here, even with an engineering degree. Gotten to the point where I'm going to start shitting out stock market spam apps that hopefully some wallstreetbets retards will pay $10/mo for because my engineering degree is apparently worthless without a phd or 10 years experience in tech that's been available for 5 years, or years of experience in advanced semiconductor fab for an entry level tech position.
