That's what i see the northern crusades as. They came over, took control of lands and became landlords. Farmers paid a tribute to feed some foreign army for benefit of merchants, nobles and aristocrats. And there is plenty of evidence for agricultural monopolizing. Good thing about narcissists is that they have no problem exposing themselves.
