In theory this is the way to do it when you want to get a tree to fall in a certain direction. And it probably would have worked in this case, except they also started cutting in the opposite direction too. The tree was kinda leaning that way to start with so that was the way it wanted to fall. When the started to cut from that other side, that's exactly what it did.
