China has begun building the worldโs largest dam โ deep in Tibet, on the Brahmaputra River. Officially called the Motuo Hydropower Station, the $160 billion project will dwarf the Three Gorges Dam and could transform Asiaโs rivers into instruments of control. The dam threatens water security in India and Bangladesh, raising fears of drought, economic damage, and even a โwater bomb.โ Experts say this is part of Beijingโs long-standing strategy to weaponise rivers, just as it has with the Mekong. India and Bangladesh have formally raised concerns, and New Delhi is now planning a counter-dam on its side of the Brahmaputra. China, meanwhile, presents the project as a gift to Tibet and a source of clean energy โ but neighbours see it as a geopolitical threat.
