'The subs don't need to be moved into position': Experts criticise 'irresponsible' nuclear move

Donald Trump's decision to move two nuclear submarines closer to Russia has been labelled "irresponsible" by experts.

Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association advocacy group, has criticised the US president's move.

"This is irresponsible and inadvisable," he said.

"No leader or deputy leader should be threatening nuclear war, let alone in a juvenile manner on social media."

Meanwhile, Hans Kristensen of the Federation of American Scientists said Trump's statements enable Dmitry Medvedev to respond.

"The subs are always there all the time and don't need to be moved into position," he said.

"He [Trump] grants Medvedev a response to these crazy statements."

Speaking outside the White House, Trump was asked why he had moved the submarines and replied: "We had to do that. We just have to be careful.

"A threat was made and we didn't think it was appropriate, so I have to be very careful. So I do that on the basis of safety for our people. A threat was made by a former president of Russia and we're going to protect our people."

The spat between Trump and Medvedev came after the US president warned Russia on Tuesday it had "10 days from today" to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or face tariffs, along with its oil buyers.

Russian industrial sites hit in overnight strikes - reports

Explosions were heard in several Russian regions overnight, according to local media and officials.

An oil refinery was reportedly struck in Ryazan, with videos on social media showing a large fire near the site.

The Kyiv Independent reports that regional officials have confirmed a drone attack took place, but didn't specify the facility that was involved.

Pro-Russian Telegram channels reported five explosions of the city of Penza.

In the Samara region, the Novokuibyshevsky oil refinery was reportedly on fire after a drone strike, with videos on local Telegram channels showing flames coming from the refinery.

The New York Times is reporting that there has been no change in India's policy, with one official saying there had not been "any direction to oil companies" to cut back imports from Russia.

Normally it's Moscow rattling the nuclear sabres, but this time it's Washington in what marks a dramatic escalation in Donald Trump's war of words with the former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.

More importantly, it appears to signal a significant deterioration in his relationship with Vladimir Putin.

The US president's patience with the Kremlin was already at its thinnest earlier this week, when he shrank his deadline for progress towards a peace deal from 50 days to 10.

But Russia's lack of outward concern with this stricter ultimatum - which has swung from dismissive to (in Medvedev's case) insulting - seems to have flicked a switch.

For this is the first time Trump's pressure on Moscow has amounted to anything more than words.

We don't know where the subs are, or how far they had to move to get closer to Russia, but it's an act that sits several rungs higher than the usual verbal threats to impose sanctions.

How will Russia respond? I'm not sure Vladimir Putin has ever caved to an ultimatum and I doubt he'll start now.

But I don't think he'll want the situation to deteriorate further. So I suspect he'll make another offer to the US, that's dressed up as a concession, but in reality may prove to be anything but.

It's a tactic that's worked before, but the stakes have suddenly got higher.

Donald Trump's decision to move two nuclear submarines closer to Russia is a "rhetorical escalation", a nuclear security expert has said.

Speaking to our presenter Anna Jones, Dr Ross Peel said: "This may be related to a signalling attempt, an attempt to send a message rather than to actually achieve anything different.

"It is absolutely a rhetorical escalation, that doesn't mean these rhetorical escalations cannot lead to military escalations, particularly if one side misinterprets what the other is trying to send."

But Peel said countries shouldn't be boasting about their nuclear capabilities and using them in a threatening way.

"It is very unusual for someone to publicly say roughly where nuclear submarines are," he said.

"The point of a nuclear weapons submarine is that we don't know where it is, and no one knows where it is in order to be able to strike back if your country is attacked."

Peel added that Trump kept his announcement "very vague", meaning we don't know the exact location of where the nuclear submarines would be.

The US submarines that can carry up to 24 ballistic missiles and dive more than 800ft

Donald Trump didn't specify what he meant by "nuclear submarines" when he said two have been ordered to move closer to Russia.

US military submarines are nuclear-powered and can be armed with nuclear-tipped missiles, but not all are.

While Trump didn't reveal any further details, the US has 14 Ohio Class nuclear-powered submarines.

Each of the submarines can carry up to 24 Trident II D5 ballistic missiles that can launch multiple thermonuclear warheads up to 4,600 miles.

According to the Nuclear Threat Initiative arms control group, between eight and 10 Ohio Class submarines are typically deployed at any one time.

The submarine was recently praised by the US Navy Secretary John Phelan, who said it "performed exceptionally" in strikes on Iran in June.

It can dive to more than 800ft and move at over 25 knots per hour. At 560ft long, the submarine can carry 15 officers and around 144 enlisted personnel.

Russia 'treading carefully' after Trump's order to move nuclear submarines

Russia is "treading carefully" after Donald Trump ordered two nuclear submarines to be moved closer to the country, a fellow at the Royal United Services Institute has said.

Speaking to our presenter Darren McCaffrey, Samuel Ramani said Trump is "trying to show that he's serious" by taking a tougher stance on Russia.

"He also wants to pre-empt Russia's ability to engage in nuclear threat mongering and nuclear brinkmanship like they do often when there are tensions with the United States," he said.

Ramani explained that Russia is being careful after what he described as a "definitive movement" away from peak levels of nuclear threat mongering at the start of the war.

"I don't think the Russians are going to escalate drastically," he said.
