When the Russians realized that they would be stuck in a long conflict, they reorganized the frontline. Specifically, they retreated from the right bank of the Dnieper, shortening the frontline and retreating from Kiev (again, the troop contingent on that area was not nearly enough to even try to take the city in earnest, but Ukrainian supporters sold that as a victory). Ukraine also took advantage of their numerical superiority to counterattack in Kharkov and part of Luhansk. Thank God I'm not a jap, but living here for over 20 years since I was a teenager (even lived through their fabled highschool life), I guess it's hope for another economic bubble combined with the boomer population that lived through the previous bubble.

It's true that Japan (and Germany) became major economies during the cold war and that was thanks to the US.
The US needed those countries to get rich to stop the USSR and made sacrifices to keep up the show.
Then the USSR collapsed and the US was balls deep in debt, so any special treatment that Japan had was gone.
The japs are probably hoping to be "needed" again, but no, that isn't happening. The US can barelly support Israel anymore.
This country needs to wake the fuck up and start making amends with Russia and China already, before it's too fucking late as the boomer population dies off.
