well it wasn't very sensible to pick up a 700+ book on existentialism as one of your 'random shit' books.
though i never start with a branch of philosophy by reading the concerned works i question.. most of it is not accessible, or perhaps you learn it's not of interest to you.
you should start with their essays (under 200 pages) or introductions.. and then critical essays. this way you will have the proper foundation as to how to interpret what you are reading, the era in which it was written in, if it is of interest to you, and how this relates to you.
there are exceptions of course, but this is for me, the most productive way to engage with philosophical writings.
