I went to the monuments in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Hiroshima one is very visible and out in the open. Like the whole city knows what it's known for. The Nagasaki one is way more low-key and eerie. The first thing you see before you go into the museum is a huge fountain that represents the clean water they didn't have after the detonation (it either evaporated or was contaminated). Crazy to think that babies were born without eyes and shit after it happened.

the Battle of Okinawa showed the US any invasion of the home islands would be bloody. Okinawa at the time had a population of 500k including troops garrisoned there.

110k soliders fought to the death. 100k civilians died fighting, women and children unalived themselves.

America had 50k casualties and that considering they had sea and air support.

Japan's home island had a population of 70 million at the time. they would fight even more fanatically on them but let's assume 28 million would die fighting. let's assume a 10 to 1 kill ratio for the US. that's still nearly 3 million dead US soldiers and nearly 9 million wounded.
