Imagine a peer group - it would be helpful for this if you had one growing up - and you're all sharing the same common experiences and experimenting with drugs and sex. Even though you're all using the same drugs, why do some in the group experiment but ultimately move on without any issue and others become strung out? Like so many things this is handwaved away as genetics. People think that your neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, etc, are made in the brain and they're not, they're mostly made by bacteria in your gut. People who have healthy gut bacteria that produce all the neurotransmitters they need don't experience the same rush and intensity while using drugs as people with unhealthy bacteria in their gut nor do they experience the same compulsion to re-dose. This is why some people get strung out because they're malnourished and the bacteria in their gut isn't producing sufficient neurotransmitters and so they're chasing what they're lacking in their diet in drugs.

All you have to do to cure drug addiction is sort out the gut microbiome but there's no money in that and also the food in the supermarkets - necessary to feed the gut bacteria - is total trash and feeds unhealthy bacteria and in many cases isn't really food at all.

Buddy, I'm after reading some of your post and you're part of the problem because you're part of the industry that profits from it and without addiction you'd be out of the job. There's no incentive to cure social ills when there's an entire complex of police, prison staff, probation officers, solicitors / barristers, judges, and so called 'addiction services' who're all depending on social ills to make this months mortgage. For one thing you said methadone works and it doesn't. I grew up with tens of people who got strung out on ginger and to this day I've never met anyone who has come off methadone permanently, it becomes part of the lifestyle and it's even harder to go through withdrawals. The withdrawals are different and far worse with victims complaining about it being in their bone marrow such is the depth it runs. Now as for trauma, trauma is stored in the body. It's been observed that people in warzones experiencing artillery shelling can have totally different experiences. Children tremor throughout it and the adults try to keep themselves stoic and composed. After the event is over the children are playing again very soon and the adults suffer PTSD. The reason is because trauma is stored in the body and trembling in fear is how the body dissipates. We also see this in animals. Observe an animal that survives a predatory attack and the very first thing it does is tremble the trauma out of its body.

Oh fuck right off. I have a ACE score of 7. My childhood was fucking awful, I grew up starving, living in filth and dirt poor, my mother was abusive to me and my sister and a whore. She drank a lot and brought random men home constantly.
I am as traumatized as they come.
But I overcame it thru self care and by cutting my mother and anyone who defends her from my life.
I grew up around a lot of drugs and poverty, including friends and neighbors.
I never tried anything.

I have a wife, a half million dollar house, children, no debt, etc etc etc.
The American dream in every sense of the word.

This bullshit where you coddle people and make excuses for them is probably the most destruct meme in modern civilization.
These people are either capable over overcoming, or they're not.

The truth is, some people cannot function outside of a quasi institutional setting where they are told when to sit and stand. Not everyone is capable of living independently. Whether it's military, a monastery, a labor camp, or an asylum, (organizations used for hundreds of years until progressives worked on tearing them down) it's not going to be a solution most liberal types ever want to consider on principle.

And I had junkies routinely break into my flat. I had a roommate who trafficked magic mushrooms. I was about twenty blocks from Main and Hastings and had to pass through it daily. I was gregarious and knew lots of people then from every background.

Yes, some are dealing with crazy traumatic shit. But others just do not draw a line for themselves as to low low they will sink. They don't have it in them. So how do you help them draw that line?
