During my upbringing, and in all Jewish communities I was ever a part of, Zionism was never in question.

It was obvious. The community was Jewish, and part of being Jewish was being a Zionist. It was so obvious that the word “Zionism” itself was virtually never used to describe it, so far as I can recall. The two were part and parcel of the same thing.

I believe that is changing. Certainly in the Jewish communities I have visibility of, there is a small but growing group who explicitly reject Zionism. In the past my sense was that this could fairly be called a fringe position among Jews. And while I think it is still a minority view by a substantial degree, I no longer think it can be called fringe. Especially among younger Western diaspora Jews, the polling seems quite stark.

The more exposed I am to these discussions around Israel and Zionism, the less inclined I am to identify as a Zionist (I probably still do, but I’d say it’s quite tentative). I would still never sign up to the pro-Palestine movement given the degree to which it is infested with antisemitism, but I also have real sympathy for the perspective that calls into question Israel’s ability to sustain itself without being racially exclusionary and discriminatory. These are views I don’t think I could have imagined entertaining 24 months ago.

It feels to me like there is a glacial shift occurring, the consensus that once seemed so obvious looks to me like it has at least cracked. In your personal experience, have you seen any shifts in Jewish attitudes on Zionism and Israel over the last couple of years?

Israel in talks with South Sudan to accept Gaza residents
Israel is in discussions with South Sudan about the possibility of resettling Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to the war-torn East African country. Six people familiar with the matter confirmed the talks to The Associated Press, but it is unclear how far the talks have advanced.

Israel's Foreign Ministry declined to comment, and South Sudan's foreign minister did not respond to questions about the talks. A U.S. State Department spokesperson said it doesn't comment on private diplomatic conversations.

Two of the officials, both from Egypt, told AP they've known for months about Israel's efforts to find a country to accept Palestinians, including its contact with South Sudan. They said they've been lobbying South Sudan against taking the Palestinians.

The AP previously reported on similar talks initiated by Israel and the U.S. with Sudan and Somalia, countries that are also grappling with war and hunger, and the breakaway region of Somalia known as Somaliland. The status of those discussions is not known.

Not showing up is so much more than just not collecting your paycheck, and it has real effects on the people who do continue to show up. Now, almost two years since I was last here in Gaza, some things have changed, and some things remain the same.

The loud booms of artillery fire and air strikes still wake you up in the middle of the night, the canned tuna wrapped in tortillas still taste bland, and most conversations still revolve around the political situation or sports. However, things have definitely improved since my last round of reserves. We have access to our phones (granting us the ability to text our parents that we’re okay), we have relatively consistent rotations for time at home, and we’ve built a shower out of water bottles and plastic piping (huge win).

The biggest change, however, is our spirit. The collective understanding of our mission has faded, and many of us feel more like pawns in a geopolitical chess match, the goal of which is not to win, rather to just keep moving the pieces aimlessly around the board to prolong the game. ...
