It’s really that simple. Remember before WW2 (even more before the turn of the 20th century) almost everyone knew what the deal was with Jews. Americans and Brit’s were somewhat more positive towards them depending on your ethnicity and religion (WASPs were usually a bit more friendly) but even than they were viewed with distrust at best.

Confucianism is a materialistic ethics/moral system and Communism is a materialistic ethics/moral system. They have their sacred texts and state approved philosophers and if you challenge that system you're unenlightened or barbaric. It's the same thing, the only major difference is the lack of an eschatological function, but there's religions that don't have eschatologies. Perhaps the Soviet brand of communism resembled Protestantism in the sense they all expected this sudden rapture from the barbarity of nationalism and imperialism, but it was still largely materialistic and nominally atheist.
