The upshot: non-orthodox (liberal, libertarian) Slavs consider Russia kinda broken. It's culturally regressive and has security structures deemed too strong to break down. For them, Ukraine is the alternative. Putin realizes this and to prevent massive brain drain into Ukraine has invaded it to make it less of an alternative to Russia.

Interesting tidbit about the invasion and its timing: right before the 2014 Donbass invasion/annexation Ukraine was beginning to rapidly increase its green energy output. The invasion caused foreign investment to be withdrawn for a time. In 2021 that output began ramping up again, and again, with Putin's invasion of the entirety of Ukraine, it was cut and green energy growth stopped cold.

Because Ukraine started the process of joining NATO. That means NATO can plant nukes (NATO is a nuclear treaty first and foremost) right next to Moscow which is pretty close to the border to Ukraine. If NATO puts nukes in Ukraine, it would remove Russians five minute response time for a retaliatory nuclear strike. the difference between two nations nuclear response time is called it's 'nuclear gap' and that's the big strength of NATO, they all have the same nuclear gap. The world makes a lot more sense once you realize that ALL internation relations and diplomacy is backed by nuclear force. Thus, russia cares if ukraine joins NATO and since it no nukes, they can wage a conventional war without fear of MAD that nuclear war guarantees.

Russia simply thought that Ukraine belongs to them. It was about power, sphere of influence and historical reasons too. Losing country that was at the heart Soviet Union and Russian Empire to Americans would have buckbroken their national spirit.

That might be true but you guys ascribe waaay too much emotion into your conclusions. Per treaty, US and Russia only have one ICBM defense network in their entire country. US is in North Dakota, Russians is in Siberia just north of Moscow. So Norway can have all the nukes it wants, as long as the network has enough countermeasures. Russia is trying to prevent being encircled just like China is, as encirclement is natos primary start for preventing BRIC from growing too strong. Nukes so close from the south/southwesterly approach is too much, enough to challenge it's existence.
