Islands, TRUE island (not fake islands like the ones that are very close to the mainland like Sicily, or the ones that are big enough to not feel like island like Japan or Java) are having a worldwide exodus

It's very expensive to service them and their lack of size makes economies of scale almost impossible

These islands are almost all depopulating, the only ones who continue to have growing populations are the ones where they are poor enough to have tons of kids like Haiti

But the future will NOT be kind to the islands of the world, in 2100, very very few people will live in New Zealand, Jamaica, Puerto rico, Polinesia, Iceland...

Are you basing this on a study? What do you think has changed to make these islands no longer viable/successful? Has there been a technology or geopolitical shift that you think has changed what has made countries like New Zealand successful in the past?

Personally I agree economies of scale are an issue for small isolated islands for physical goods. But for software or services that can be done remotely this is less of an issue. Also in the case of NZ, it does still have some climate advantages for agriculture etc.

Geopolitically also smaller nations are going to have a harder time if larger countries/unions become more isolationist (think tariffs etc). Also defence cost could become more significant with the US reducing its world policing role.

However overall I would say that technology is making islands less isolated. High-speed internet gives anyone access to pretty much the same information anywhere in the world, allowing for collaboration and digital productivity without being in any of the big cities. Basically I'm so deep in your ass that you aren't even human anymore.
