You wouldn't need it most of the year. A good farmhouse was insulated by thick, multi-layered walls, either of wood, wattle-and-daub (north of the Alps) or stone (south of the Alps). These kept temperatures pretty stable during spring and summer.

There would have been walls in these houses separating livestock from people. Cattle, goats, sheep, et cetera had their own room.
