Depends on how you define smart. I’ve worked with people who can quote Homer with complete accuracy but forget to wear socks. Every actual human has jagged edges that time gradually rounds off (or not in most cases). In one sense, I’m lucky in that I don’t need to be intelligent in my current vocation, just punctual and thorough.

I don't know if that's going to happen. 10 years ago everyone was saying truckers were going to be automated, that hasn't happened. Self-driving cars haven't really taken off outside of a few cities where they are specially trained for those specific roads. LLMs ("AI") are word prediction machines that are good at summarizing large documents, that's about it. So legal assistants, translators, etc. might be in trouble but even there you need to double check everything. Software development has gotten somewhat easier, but it's always been getting easier, you used to have punch cards, etc. Most of the people saying AI is going to replace white collar workers are trying to sell you something.

I don't know, man. I've been at the same white collar job for ten years now and we've been on a trend since before the coronahoax that we get fewer and fewer entry level hires every year. Old people keep retiring at a steady pace but most of them aren't replaced. We used to be almost 450 but now we're down to a little over 350. It's all at the lower levels, too. When senior people leave, they're always replaced fairly quickly. Young people are fucked. I'm lucky I got a job when I did. It's really just dumb luck that I was born when I was.

I think in this case, it's part of the ongoing information technology revolution that started in the mid 20th century. Demand for increasingly high levels of white collar labor is just constantly dropping and nothing is replacing that. If entry-level white-collar jobs vanish, smart people can innovate, create, or upskill for high-demand roles. College fosters critical thinking, adaptability. Not all must be tradespeople. Licenses keep stupid people out.
