There is a percentage of the populace that listens to music that is opposite of whatever their life and mentality is like, but it's not the dominant cause of listening to music. The dominant cause is wanting to listen to something in sync with their brain waves.

Metal is not an attractive genre. It’s a guilty pleasure, but among “normies” who end up living healthy and successful lives, almost none of them would listen to a band like Marduk. Have you seen a metal festival? It’s usually a sausage fest full of neckbeards who think they’re vikings. Meanwhile, a Taylor Swift concert or Coachella is full of beautiful young girls and men who have chins. Even EDM is more acceptable socially.
