My home went from a fair market value of $250k to $1MM in 5 years and we have exhausted our appeals. I went from paying $5k/yr to $20k/yr for no reason other than the housing market went up. But it's nominal, especially for a regular SFH, and the tax amount should reflect that. Talking couple hundred a year at most. Really what we need is land value tax as that discourages hoarding and keeping in demand land undeveloped to save taxes by speculators. This would mean only the land is taxed, not improvements, so owners of normal lots wouldn't pay tons of money like they do now. Also get rid of all exemptions for non-profits.
