After seeing the nothingburger today I came here just to watch the seething and suicide letters. It’s beyond EOY, the jobs didn't disappear, the banks didn't collapse (unfortunately), no more use cases and all the dirty laundry is out in the air now.

I'm not really in that kind of job anymore, I'm blue collar now, but I'll tell you the answer. You say that you saw your general manager snorting coke in the bathroom. That is the answer. People who do those kinds of jobs for years on end develop drug addictions, whether it's just weed, or it's coke, or it's heavy alcoholism of benzodizepine abuse or something else or all combined. You can't work a shitty job without some kind of escape.

I did uber - eats not rides - in between jobs for about 3 months when I got fired. I’m a sales guy and do quite well at it but every once in a while you get a manager or fellow sales person, usually a woman but sometimes a man, who will get upset that you are outperforming them, or dont understand why you’re performing well and others aren’t. So they have it out for you and it’s tough to okay defense in that situation.


But yeah I did uber eats for about 3 months and made around $750 a week in 40 hours or less. It depends on your market but I was averaging about 18-24 an hour. You learn quick which restaurants and delivery areas to avoid. I did a lot of shopping jobs as they paid better. You get used to the ins and outs and can eke out decent money, though it is a dead end job for sure. It has a nice individual freedom aspect to it, as you are just in your car driving around picking up and delivering wothout much human interaction at all. Dont be afraid to decline jobs I try to get a buck a mile or better and I immediately decline anything less than $4. They will tell you you need to accept a certain percentage to get “premium” orders but that’s bullshit. Don’t waste your time on shit deliveries and you can at least pay the bills. I would usually work like 5pm to 2am weekdays with a 2 hr break in the middle, making around 140 and Friday night 5-2 solid, sat and sun work solid 11am to 9 pm making around $200

Should have picked a coffee shop instead. I make $16.50 working at dunkin and add tips on top of that and I easily make $17.50 to $18 easily. Not a lot of money but it is easy money and better than nothing.

I ate shit and had to take a $25k pay-cut. I've clawed a bit of that deficit back via performance raises and adjusting my lifestyle. We have a consumer based economy. The point of our system is so that we have money to spend on things. Most Americans spend lots of money because it keeps our economy running. Most Americans who earn over 100k per year eat dinner at restaurants 3-4 times per week. They have new cars with an avg car payment of $800 per month.

When Americans get raises and earn more money, they rarely save or invest that money, they just start spending more to raise their quality of life. Yes this is stupid in the long term personally, but it's the only reason why our economy is the greatest in the world. Very few Americans have the self discipline to maintain their current standard of living when they start earning more money

Spoken like someone with experience in the restaurant industry. I took a food prep job out of desperation a while back and can generally corroborate your observations about restaurant types. Even the competent ones usually have some type of crippling personal flaw, most commonly alcoholism. One guy on the line with me gets the shakes if he hasn't had a drink in a few hours, but at least he never calls off when he's hungover like everyone else.

Another thing I've observed is that nearly every one of my coworkers is absolutely terrible with money. The waitresses rake in hundreds in tips on busy nights and spend it all on girls' night out and periodic vacations. One of my fellow cooks, who is skilled but also kind of insane was facing eviction several months ago, so I lent him $200. Eight months later and I am still waiting for the fucker to give me the last $100.

For me, overall, it's not that bad because I don't drink or stress out and the manager is a rare functioning adult.
