I don't think it is that India needs to buy the oil from Russia. They could buy it elsewhere. Rather, it is that India wants to maintain good relations with Russia because they want to have a potential source of oil and fertilizers that is immune to US sanctions, in case India gets subjected to US sanctions. Otherwise, India would be just one White House decree away from economic collapse and famine.

Fact is that only Russia and Saudi can produce oil at anything like a price that thirdies can afford.
The only oil that comes from the west is expensive fracked and offshore stuff.
Since oil is the foundation of a modern economy then there's literally nothing that can stop India from buying the oil. Their existence depends on it.
