- Buds (to test the standard)

- Local beer (no difference)
- Heineken (to see if at least this is still European quality, nope, same thing)
- Sapporo (out of desperation, still same crap)

Why is your beer tasteless?

I can explain it very quickly: the U.S. is as big as multiple European countries combined, the state of Texas is bigger than your whole country of Romania, and that's just 1 state out of 50: as a byproduct, domestic beers have a large focus on mass production and distribution, to guarantee stocked shelves nationwide. Beer brewed for quantity, not for quality. All local beers brewed within one's own city is always free of this problem because it's distribution range is usually no larger than said city, ergo they brew for quality to remain competitive with the big names like Budweiser.

PA here, Yueng is the only acceptable mass market American beer.

pic related, it's a tiny section of the beer section in the alcohol department of my local grocery store. There's about 50 different types of beer here, from at least 20 or 30 different brands. And yes this is just a portion of the beer section. Altogether my local grocery store has hundreds of different beers to choose from.

In general there are 3 kinds of beer makers in the US. You have the big domestic brewers. This is Budweiser, Miller, Coors, Yuengling to a degree, Pabst Blue Ribbon. These are the big ones sold absolutely everywhere.

Next you have craft breweries which were bought by large breweries 10+ years ago. This is stuff like Boulevard Brewing for example, which was bought by Dutch company InBev a decade or so ago.

Thirdly you have truly independent craft brewers, which can range from large operations that sell their beer in multiple states, to small "pico-breweries" that might only sell at their brewery and be in a couple of bars in a city.

In general, only the last category is actually truly good beer. But there is some good stuff in all categories. Even amongst the major brewers, Yuengling is quite good, for example.

Basically, Budweiser is the absolute worst beer in the US. Honestly even Coors Light or Coors Banquet is a lot better.

Going to America and drinking Budweiser is like going to Europe and drinking Heineken. Yet you didn't mention Heineken in your posts, you only mentioned Pilsner Urquell and Ursus which are more premium beers.

I've been to 4 different states in America and found the same as OP.

I also found a number of other things.

You do get larger portions of food in diners but that is where the good stuff ends.
The Burgers are tasteless and only improved by the shit loads of other stuff like sauces that are piled upon them, same goes for Hotdogs, American hotdogs tend to be beef (I think pork is not Kosher in the USA) again the flavour comes from the other ingredients.

Groceries are expensive, compared to Britain and once you get to the checkout it rises even more because they hide 'sales tax'!

Like OP says, the beer is also tasteless, no idea why? And they seem to think Heineken is good Euro Beer but there is no flavour to it, bit of a shock, it's pretty hum drum in Britain but at least you can taste it.

It also reeks of poverty but that's another story.

The country is overall much better suited for cider production at scale anyway, we should switch back. I suppose there's room for everything though. Hell, sake producers in the SW and California are getting better every year.

Go to a good liquor store and buy beer from regional areas. Mass produced beer is for idiots who don't know any better. To get a decent American beer you have to be almost as snoody with the same amount of discretion as a wine drinker. Incidentally I am a wine drinker. If anything there's just so much variety, so much choice, so much competition that it's hard to stand out even with a quality product and few have managed to get more than regional distribution with any consistency at best becoming a northeast beer, or a mid west beer, or a great lakes beer, or mid atlantic beer, or so on since the first wave of craft brewing got big and got bought up. Most of those 90s and early 2000s craft breweries were in fact worse and made worse staple beers, they just had a relative vacuum of competition to work in only having to be better than pisswater. Extreme stuff exists and i while i don't touch the crap it has it's place. In the flooded market that exists it's just a way to stand out against the stiff competition and get your name out. The US has a bad history with alcohol. Between Prohibition and the taboo against drinking, people either booze too much or not at all. When you think about it, social drinking is about loosening inhibitions and the country, being multi-cultural, tends to have plebes who overdo it to prove that they are cool, and miserly businesses and women who think that it's a sin to spend your money on anything other than raising your own two-legged livestock. You can't expect people to put too much effort into it.

Most American beer also tops out at about six percent alcohol. Like wine, naturally fermented drink can reach about 12 percent alcohol before the yeast starts dying. American beer is produced in volume. Brewers tend to go for the "good enough" quality rather than the perfected product. I'd call it a head game between looking macho when you're pounding them down, and duping the plebes to buy more quantity at a cheaper cost to make. There's probably other factors like shelf-life to consider.

I don't do beer much anymore because I'm prone to gout. I personally prefer stouts over German pilsners or lagers which are the majority of beers here. When you cross that line from kegs to bottles or cans, you have to go through extra steps to get the foamy texture that goes along with a real stout. They use some kind of ball in the can that releases the foam when you open the can.

Long story short, we just don't do beer culture like they do in Europe because we don't have a culture for local breweries.

Not the point. Europeans tend to favor dark roasted espresso coffee. We tend to favor black coffee served in 8 to 10 oz. mugs. Same kick, but more volume.

Personally, I think we could make our own coffee if we were to make a serious effort at breeding a good robusta bean. Arabica beans favor high altitude farming and we don't really have the hot climate/altitude mix on most American soil. Robusta typically has about 50% more caffeine and has a kind of off taste that seems like some kind of battery acid, but I think it could be improved on.

Yuengling and Coors Light are refreshing and I'm not looking to get hammered but mellow out a bit. Quality and ABV may be lower but it's affordable and widely available. Depending on context, alcohol usage can be casual and somewhat public. In my town it's like paper bag law. If you're just chilling in a park or beach and not being an obvious ass, it's permitted. What I do like about the US drinking culture is you are never far from available alcohol and it's affordable and publicly acceptable in many contexts. Bars, restaurants, stadiums, museums(!), clubs, liquor stores that carry every type of spirit - in my state you can even buy THC drinks in liquor stores! - at every price range, from malt 40s to johnny walker blue and higher on the shelf. We like our drinking in this country. And if beer is the drink of the common man, it's plentiful and affordable here, and it may not be the best but it will get you drunk.
