Wehn I was a kid my grandfather used to build wooden models of old sailing ships. As a hobby. I thought it was fascinating watching him work away. He would do it from scratch, acquiring plans of the ship, scaling them down, and then crafting the materials from soft wood. As he worked he would tell us a bit about the history of the ship, where it was built, where it sailed, and its eventual fate. He would also explain the workings of the ship, the reason for its structures. All very simple of course since I was just a kid. What he did took real skill, planning, and craftsmanship. I didn't appreciate his skill at the time but I can now. His models would be perfect recreations of actual ships. Sometimes he would show me photos of the real ship and I would compare them to the model. They were always perfect.
I get what he was doing. A relaxing hobby that engaged his mind and his hands. I think he was also paying tribute to the the real shipbuilders of the time.
But I just dont get this lego shit. Plastic blocks that lock together is some sort of mine craft simulation of something unreal? There is no real skill there. No challenge. No attention to detail. No history. No tribute. Just pay the money and assemble it within an afternoon? Its just a fucking mystery to me why this stuff seems to hook people in.

its a similar thing to your grandpa, but people like "building" things, even when they're not really "building" it themselves. I really like making furniture, etc from random bits of wood for example, but Lego provides that experience without the additional labour of thinking about what you're going to make/how you're going to make it, it's instant gratification.

I used to love getting Star Wars action figures and wrestling action figures. My life was consumed by it at one point. But around 12 or 13, some friends came over and I was mocked for it. So I hid the box and eventually stopped caring about figures.
