I guess I'll compare them to to USA from what I think. They stretch things out, and take care of things, unlike usa where we are wasteful. They respect nature. They are much more mindful than us, like they try to be legitimately present, americans are fucking gone. They make sure their people starve maxx into attractiveness. Japanese culture is about 14 hour shifts, wearing masks and pretending you care about your 90+ year old relatives who societally pressure everyone else to act like things are better than they really are beneath the surface. Since world War 2 they've been spiritually disconnected from their roots as a race of warriors (kinda like the greeks but with rice) and now even their language is an awful hodgepodge of broken English and abuse of Onomatopoeia that struggles to express anything other than repetitive 'stock phrases' so they prefer to remain silent and unsocial. This has always been a problem, both due to the limitations of the spoken language and the limitations of the written language. The outcome is that people are very poor at expressing themselves and they get frustrated when they inevitably fail. Where words fail, saving face, lies, hierarchies and violence enter the picture. Essentially primitivism. The only saving grace is that people are trained like circus monkeys to excel at a task. I get Japan looks clean and organized, but their culture is basically living in a cramped room, traveling on a cramped train, working for so long they literally let people sleep on the job because it's a sign of committment that you worked yourself to exhaustion over there, ride another packed commuter train back to your little shithole, eat a cheap ass Bento box for dinner, then do it all over again the next day for the rest of your life. The issue is that people really don't see how influential the YMO guys (and Toshiki Kadomatsu and Suzuki Shigeru) were on literally all japanese music in the 80s. If you look at album credits from literally anything from that era, its very likely you'll find at least one of those five names producing/composing/arranging on at least a couple of the songs. Suzuki Shigeru for example tends to have much more understated tones in his music (with focus on instrumentals only), but when he's producing for female vocalists, tends to be really catchy.

Yuko Imai is fantastic, though her most recent album's music video where she's into a dude in his 20s is kinda cringe when you realize she's like 60. That said, Do Away was my first vinyl.

I'm surprised Taeko Ohnuki isn't mentioned in this thread. She's probably the most actually good female musician in Japan. Originally started with Tatsuro Yamashit and Shigeru Suzuki and carried that sound for her first couple albums, though after Mignonne, she started to get increasingly whimsical/bossa nova and gave up on catchy mainstream music for a really specific sound that literally every album after Comin' Soon has (there's like 20 of them).

Japanese culture is the epitome of Asian exoticness, without becoming weird or disgusting like chink shit. They westernized earlier than their counterparts but managed to keep most of their culture alive. They adapted modern tech, infused it with sovl, and made the best of what they had. They have a culture of respect and cultural cohesiveness.

One concert she said it was her last performance, she just didnt feel like singing any more and disappeared forever. Her uncle exposed her secret in his will, a decade after she died (alone).

The appeal of Jun Togawa to me is the shit personality. Shes goddamn autistic. Her parents actively discouraged her from pursuing a career in music because they told her, unlike her sister, she has no talent.

I think she embodies a lot of that rejection and projects it into an intentionally difficult image. Its like Allison in breakfast club, or literally the people on this website. You can tell she has singing talent, like on Showa Kyonen, but then she screeches autistically on Tamahime. Suki Suki Daisuke is a perfect blend of the intentional bad and good... she seems to not want to be liked. "If you thought I'm retarded, it was cause I'm retarded on purpose" just seems to radiate from everything she does.

Anyway, I'm listening to your G-Schmitt suggestions. It's not bad music, but its a bit different than my usual idol/citypop. As always, the suggestion is appreciated.

Allow me to reiterate.
Akina was a total workhorse in the beginning of her career. The first few albums were great, especially the Hosono ones. I think something inside of her died with Kita Wing. It wasn't even the turning point, it's just that everything past that single was noticeably weaker. Sure, if you want to go full hipster, you can say Fushigi, her original album, was top notch because she sang what she wanted to, but it doesn't sit right with me.
Seiko is overhated due to her being a drama queen, especially now that her daughter an heroed. It's not her fault she was a hoe.
Miharu and Takahashi went full oiaboo for awhile, I don't know why Japs like France so much. I guess it's because 80s French were still white.
Junko Mihara is a very interesting person, starting as an actress and singer, contracting STDs thanks to her comedian ex husband to becoming a right wing politician. Her band was incredible, obviously inspired by Iron Maiden of all things. Her most popular songs were rockabilly ones, which is a shit genre that somehow remained relevant in Japan for 20 years too long. I think she's more than worth a listen,
Mariko Fuji has a beautiful voice, she's one of those earlier singers from the time when women were still seductresses instead of burikkos.

Big agree about Akina. Kita Wing was a turning point, though I do like the more mature later Akina stuff. Unlike Seiko, Akina did a great job imo transitioning from kawaii bouncy girl to a more serious singer. Fushigi was quite literally just weird though. It was interesting to listen to once as a concept but that was it for me.

I've read that 84-85 was a turning point for Akina due to personal issues. She had a relationship with some old guy that turned out to be a sleaze (major influence on later, darker music), and her family had expected a lot from her fiancially due to her success and also looked down on her for it, which caused a lot of strain on her. I think at some point her sister made nudey mags trying to impersonate her which ended her relationship with her family. I'm not sure of all the timelines though, I never got too into the gossips. I'd much rather dig into the more anonymous people like Yuko Tomita or Asami Kado who suddenly vanished at the end of the bubble than the more mainstream celebrities.

Seiko is okay, her music during the early 80s was really catchy. Her 90s "Time for Love" bad girl reimage was peak cringe and killed her even faster than just naturally getting old did.

I've listened to Mihara's Windy City and Top Secret, they def were alright. Interesting backstory though, I haven't given her much thought beyond spinning the vinyls before this thread. I just didn't think of her as important from a CP perspective, though her rock isn't bad.

Miho's popularity, I got the impression, only came about because Akina and Seiko were fading particularly right after the Akina hero attempt and gossip of Seiko being involved in that scandal. And they were getting old. Unfortunately for Miho, I think she (and Chisato moritaka) got caught in the collapse of the bubble and weren't able to adapt well to it.

Its nice to talk to someone else who knows a bit about this stuff and doesn't just suck Tats Yamashita's dick.
