The machines that are like this, but also dispense water (they have different ones with a water spout too) are the single best part of visiting Appalachia.
Don't get me wrong, I love a good spring, and I carry a bunch of gallon jugs with me for daily use, but a spring can't give you ice.
I was in the smokies, and the gas stations there would ONLY sell little itty bitty half liter bottles for an outrageous price.

What I would like to see more of:
self-serve stands selling food, art.
More theater and music, it should just be everywhere like you pull up in any town and there's a band going with strings.
Appalachia had boom days 120 years ago, and it could have them again with a concerted, cooperative effort that favored local flavor over corporate interests.

I noticed in NY state especially there were lots of self serve stands with honey and jams and fruit and bread and stuff, some of the more annoying ones had copious signage about how you were on camera and would be humiliated on facebook if you stole or whatever.
