So imagine that, you have lost your strongest army, your allied forces no longer exist, and you are still trying to extract Army Group A which is balls deep in the Caucus. Most of the Luftwaffe's transport capacity has been lost over Stalingrad. And its still fucking winter.
So what does Manstein do? He goes on the offensive, recognizing the Russians are over stretched. He fucks them up, he fucks them good, recovers the situation and stabilizes the front line. Balls of steel.

You never hear much about this counter offensive. Yet it must rate as one of history's greatest instances of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. The German defensive success at Arnhem was also a great accomplishment. But for sheer bloody heroic sheer chudisness would be Von Wenck's rescue of the 9th Army from the Halbe pocket in 1945. In the face of the advancing Americans he turned his 12th Army around and ordered them to march East and rescue their comrades from the Russians. An almost impossible task. Vastly under strength German divisions exhausted by months of continuous combat nevertheless fought their way through the Russians and saved many thousands of their comrades. That is fucking heroic.

Case Yellow was literally a fluke that succeeded due to circumstances beyond German control.
Had the Belgians kept their alliance with France, had the French commanders reacted to the captured offensive plans, had the French stationed a mere 2 divisions at Sedan, had the French simply scouted the Ardenne once, had there been a random misfortune that caused a traffic jam in the Ardenne etc, the entire operation would have ended in catastrophe.

Nearly all German generals believed the Ardenne offensive in Case Yellow to be complete madness because all the stars had to be aligned for it to work. Hitler had to literally veto the decision for Manstein to put it forward.

The war should have ended in 1940 but alas, one major success and it kept going for another 5 years.

Forcing Russia to strike first would also bring Japan into the war.
As it was, Japs weren't required to help out.
(Nor was Germany required to help them after Pearl Harbor, but Hitler decided to declare war on USA regardless.)
