I have a friend who's side hustle is installing high-end custom wallpaper. It's the weirdest thing I can possibly imagine him doing given his day job. He just loves taking $5000 pieces of paper and slapping it up on the wall with no margin for error. Kind of respect that.

I have been shopping for more property to buy and its crazy just how fucking gaudy some noveau riche types are, they plaster some walls with the worst wallpaper you have ever seen completely ruining rooms in the process. I can see your friend make a killing out of these types.

Says they also sell paint. I would think that alone would keep the business afloat while also offering some wallpaper for niche projects.

As a kid in the early 90s, helped my parents and grandparents wallpaper their houses.
It was beyond frustrating.

They even tried wallpapering the ceiling in one room. I still remember grandma yelling FUCK when it fell down during the middle of the night. lmfao

Wallpaper is having a minor revival but unlike gallons of paint, wallpaper ships easy and websites fronting a warehouse can have far more variety for less cost than a retail outlet.

The classic styles just don't work well with modern minimalist furniture, harsh bright lighting, and clean open room designs. With big heavy ornate dark wood furniture, lower warm lighting, more compact cozy spaces, and massive antique oriental rugs that cost a good chunk of the down payment of a starter home with their own patterns those weird earthy patterns of classic wallpaper designs can work really well. I agree if you just slap them up in a modern average home they do look ugly as sin though. Hell, they can be ugly patterns in and of themselves, but in the right context it just kinda works somehow.

I've browser a lot of NZ real estate listings, and what is truly crazy is how ugly NZ interiors are, it's on another level. Half your houses have the same grey carpet wall to wall. I'm on the flashy wallpaper people's side, they are just trying to take back their sanity amid the wreckage.

Popcorn ceilings, painted over with water proof paint. Try removing that.
Also textured vinyl wallpaper. Its tougher than the wall behind it.

The only wall paper you will ever need! Cradle to grave. Only problem is the person who comes behind you trying to remove it.

Not many people use wallpaper here anymore. I don't know about Ireland. Store was too specialized. Should have also sold paint, spackle and caulk. Probably sell some tiles too.

I lived in an old house built in 1902. It had bumpy horse hair plaster. It had 7 layers of wallpaper and 2 layers of paint on the kitchen walls when I renovated it in the 90's. Had to put new wallpaper because everything was peeling off and the walls were too bumpy to paint directly on top without looking like shit. The plaster looked like it was only going to last a few more decades. If I would still be living there I might be replacing all the old plaster right about now instead of just a section. Modern plaster is much smoother so wallpaper is unnecessary.

They really should have had a clearance sale years ago on half their wallpaper to make room for new inventory.

Smoking cigarettes, cooking greasy foods, touching walls with filthy hands, and toddlers drawing on walls with a crayon. If you don't smoke usually a damp cloth or Mr. Clean eraser will do. Grease often needs chemical cleaners. That can build up on kitchen walls and become a fire hazard. Not an everyday thing but something that should be done every few months.
Anonymous (ID: bBMK/6Yi) United States No.519443378 [Report]
>>519435743
Also for people who can't afford to replace all of their old crumbly wall plaster. It gives the wall a few more years and keeps you from breathing plaster particles. There are some nice designs from the 80's and 90's. I don't know if they still make anything like it now. But the stuff from before is usually hideous. I live in a house from the 80's and had to remove wallpaper in one bedroom and was sad to see it go. All painted walls in my house now. Unlike when I was living in the 1900's house back in the 90's. All of the old wallpaper I ended up replacing never looked good even before it was peeling off. I was only able to find one old timey style that looked good for the living room. That was the only room where we tried to have it look like the era the house was built in. Yet somehow in my current home that 80's wallpaper looked good even when it was half peeled off the wall almost 30 years later.

pebbledash (and roughcast, pretty much the same thing) is actually quite useful for damp countries. It throws rain off better than bricks and insulates, Scotland has got shitloads of houses covered in it. I'd agree, it doesn't look great and it got a bad rep as often used to cover up shoddy brickwork. But its not unuseful, when properly applied.
