Cancer is caused by many things, but primarily cell damage due to radiation, poisons or tissue damage.

Each of the cells that can divide has a complete copy of our DNA inside. Each time the cell divides, that DNA strand divides. An enzyme remakes the other half so both daughter cells have the full strand.

However, every time a cell divides, a piece is torn off the beginning and end of the strand. This is okay because there are about 100 repeating alleles at each end that don't code for anything and are sacrificial. They are called telomeres.

Once a cell has only a few left, it will no longer divide. This is the third and final safety mechanism that prevents a cell from going rogue, which is cancer.

A cell that isn't doing what it's supposed to (dividing because it can't detect it's neighbors but the neighbors are actually there for example) is ordered to kill itself. If the cell can't hear the kill command, it will still go on dividing, and the daughter cells will also be damaged in that way. If the cell hears the signal but cannot comply because of other damage, it also keeps going. But the telomeres running out (The Hayflick Limit) prevents it from dividing until it kills the person.

Cancer is our own cells going rogue. We use radiation and chemicals to destroy the fucked up cells and hope that new undamaged ones will take their place. But if that doesn't happen, or we don't detect the cancer until it is really advanced, or it's in tissue we can't just kill (esophagus for example) then the case is terminal.
