This election is particularly significant because every single left-wing Irish party has rallied behind Catherine Connolly, as a precursor to a potential left-wing coalition for the elections in 2030. If Catherine Connolly wins, it's highly likely that lefty parties (in particular Sinn Féin) will get a bump in votes at the polls next time round.

He hoped to run for the Presidency, but popular Irish musician "CMAT" released a song blaming him individually for the economic crash in Ireland in the early 2000s. He has since vanished from the public eye.

Many will be wondering how the "spoil the vote" campaign will play out. I said earlier ITT, my guess is it'll pass over 10%. In some polling stations, it is coming in 2nd behind Connolly. Of course-this won't do anything, there's zero real reason for spoiled votes to be paid any mind. But it'd be very, very funny for spoiled votes to beat both the Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil candidates, since they were essentially the government picks.

Many "spoil the vote" supporters wanted Maria Steen. Steen is an arch conservative, and part of the Iona Institute-basically a Catholic lobby group for hard conservative social values.

Presidential elections are every 7 years; she showed up more or less out of the blue, failed to show up to nomination meetings with key councils (such as Waterford, which would have nominated her in a heartbeat) and then demanded the constitution be changed to allow her to run.

If we're talking sheer aesthetics, I think the Connolly camp wins.

There's a rising trend of "Gaelic Aesthetics" in the left in Ireland; artists and musicians are incorporating Gaelic inspired fonts or patterns/imagery in a lot of their stuff, while the Irish language revival movement has got a big bump in popular support in recent years.

I think this election will have a lot of lessons for the losers.
