Life was genuinely better, but every generation pines for 20 to 30 years ago. In the 90s/2000s, 70s nostalgia was huge. Likewise with the 50s in the 70s/80s.

I remember the girl on the picture very well. Her name was Jenna and she was the slut in the trailer park! She let all the boys finger her while we were playing Mario Kart and smoking weed! I remember i got my whole fist into her once on my 17th birthday and didnt wash my hands for 2 weeks because i loved the smell lol!

That feels like a century ago now. Nostalgia hits hard :(

It was better. It was comfier. It was more peaceful. Why? Jews and leftists weren't trying to take over media and games. Culture was cool, edgy, and eXXXtreme. Every movie and game was cool. There was a feeling that it will only improve after that and that we were born in the best era possible.

>nooo it's your nostalgia!

No. I have no nostalgia for any year after 2014. It's 2014 when Jews started pushing leftist narratives and woke shit. August 2014 (start of Gamergate) is the end of the past era and the start of the Culture War Era that has lasted for 11 years now. And for the last 11 years, I have had kike fatigue.

oh fuck off with that. it really is true that only boring people get bored, and also dont mistake constant agitation on social media with not being bored. everyone is bored and they try to hide from it by endlessly scrolling on twatter etc. theres more boredom and idleness than ever before because no one has any actual hobbies or interests since its all been subsumed by the omnipresent Phone

As a German:
90s - cope
00s - reality

The 90s were pretty shit and boring, kinda proto-2010s with feminism, weak men, puritan society and so on. It was not a fun time to be a teenager. Fashion was shit, music was shit compared to the 80s, women were frigid and cold.

00s were much, much better (until Obama that is). Bush's unapologetic jingoism and leftist butthurt created a romantic era that zoomers cannot even imagine. Yeah, there were problems but they were laughable compared to what we have now, like a kid complaining about bad grades in maths.

Maybe it was different in the US?

I believe a lot of generations believe their younger years were better than the current age. But yeah the 90's were better. The advent of the internet fucked everything up. It got it's tentacles into everything, even the refrigerator and the washing machine... not to mention the video games. They dangled something useful in front of our eyes, made it more powerful, and then used it against us in almost every way they could.

People paid attention to the world around them in public because there were no smart phones that monitored everywhere you went. The culture was more organic. People were less socially stunted. The digital age sucks.

The reality was that if you were a kid who lived near your school, you likely had friends that lived nearby. You can get out and go socialize with them easily. Your social experiences were limited and the troubles of the world were easy to shut out. Your parents worked less than you do now for relatively more pay and benefits in that the dollar stretched further and owning a home was much, much cheaper. There were still financial crisises, there was still conflict and unrest (Rodney King riots happened in the 90s). Also you were a kid with less knowledge and responsibilities. You got all the benefits while experiencing everything as fresh and new without the baggage of knowing what's happening, where things come from, and what you would be doing for work. If you would ever stress about having, starting, or not starting a family.

The vast majority of media being analog made for a very different world. News moved slower, quality tv and movies had more staying power, since every new release wasnt instantly available to binge watch - there was less 'flavor of the month' releases that got quickly forgotten. Thats not to mention social media. People are objectively less human than they were back then. Everybody receives psycho-software updates from their phones now. If some big news thing happens over night, most people are reading about in bed on their phones, being instructed about what their stance on it should be by vloggers and influencers and by the time they step out of the shower that morning, they've got a fully formed, carefully administered opinion about the thing that they're ready to argue about. People were much less vitriolic about politics back then. Unless you were involved in it or a sophmore in uni going through an activist phase, you probably would be unlikely to disown a family member over who they vote for.

yeah agree with all that. theres definitely something to be said for a slower pace of things in general and the value which we attach to them. We want more and more and faster and faster but in getting that the value of each thing in itself decreases...and perhaps because the producers of stuff feel the need to produce more and more and faster and faster the value decreases on that end too.

Very important point. This meant that those involved in politics, voters, needed to consider important failures, successes, or controversies rather than getting lost in the sauce of constant overstimulating information and news flow through the internet. That's what makes Trump perfect for this; he's a product of both our brain damage but also our justified disillusionment with government and "the establishment".

What people don’t grasp is that during the 1990s the vast majority of people didn’t have the latest technology, clothes or cars. If you went back to 1995 in a time machine you would probably think you were in 1985 in most western countries because outside of the mega rich and the affluent parts of capital cities everyone was still years “behind”. It wasn’t like now when any normie can have anything they want on finance, you had to pony up the cash if you wanted something and shit was expensive. A street scene from 30 years ago would typically feature cars from 40-50 years ago and people dressed like we think people in the 80s did

The dumb shit nostalgia about toys and games is pointless. Most people didn’t have that or care about it. We were still using leaded petrol and a lot of people still had a black and white television

I think this time around it's based on reality. We lived through the disconnect between analog -> fully digital. We grew up on landlines, nokias, and eventually the first smart phone. We had typing classes and CRTs while plasma screens were still out of reach for most households. We lived through dial up, basic wifi, and now everything hyper connected. I've said it here before, but I truly believe the iphone signaled the beginning of the end. As soon as internet and smartphones were no longer gatekept (and made readily available to the general public) everything went to shit. I like to meme gamergate as much as the next person, but everyone having equal access to the internet planted the diseased seeds long before GG did.

Despite what you and other kids now believe, the average home 30 years ago was not full to the brim with Nintendo products and Apple Mac computers and all the other stuff you fantasise about. I didn’t own a mobile phone until 1999 and prior to that it was the preserve of old guys with top jobs. We weren’t all running around with brick phones on our way to buy the latest cool product because it just wasn’t available. Car leases weren’t a thing. To get a credit card you needed to make a top 10 percent income. Most people were paid weekly in cash, you queued up for your pay and some woman on a big desk with a big ashtray gave you it and you counted it out in front of her. People were driving cars from the 70s. Everyone I knew had a manual job. Even when we went to visit family in the US, which was more affluent, the typical person was not spending their time playing video games or wanking off Charizard

It was not some nerd dreamland where you all got to use the cutting edge of technology all of the time. What you are doing is the equivalent of people in 20 years time thinking we all had Tesla Plaids, Ray Ban Meta glasses, hoverboards and gender reassignment surgery. Some people do, but it isn’t anywhere near a significant amount

A bit of both. Life sincerely was better before the internet and social media completely destroyed everything, but a lot of the romanticization is based on unjustified nostalgia. It was still a fucked up time of decline. It was just more normal and sane, with moments of joy. Now it’s just a big soup of incoherent dog shit.

There was a transition between pre-literacy and post-literacy but this process took thousands of years. And then a process between rare literacy and mass literacy, this took hundreds of years. And then a process for the development of radio, television, and telephones, but this took decades. The transition to mass internet use basically took under a decade, from around 2008-ish to 2018-ish.

There is the natural nostalgia for the way society seemed when you were younger, but there is also a much greater nostalgia because society really has gone through a major revolution (not unprecedented, this has happened when governments changed before), but then ALSO there is this new nostalgia because society has also changed in how history and current events are described and recorded. A lot of stories have been about the transition to radio, television, and telephone, and how that interacted with print media, and that took longer and was arguably less severe. This is the first time a significant % of the population have all undergone this kind of transition in such a short time. We really haven't seen much in the way of stories about this yet, but it's subtext in almost everything.

Life personally now is better in a lot of ways because my area degraded hard and I moved somewhere a lot nicer but I feel bad for 20 year olds trying to start their lives and being blocked at every turn. Globalization and to a greater extent. this 24/7 always on everywhere at everytime to everyone shit is tiring. Things were bad before Covid but I feel like I’ve been living in hell since 2020.
Technology was cozy back then because you could get away from it. Things were engineered and developed well because it didn’t cost fifty cents to make and you couldn’t push constant updates. College took effort to get into an wasn’t flooded with international students. You worked in kitchens with people that spoke English because we weren’t flooded with cheap labor.
I’m 40 and I’m pretty sure despite making 50k more than five years ago it’s worth less.
