Buying and flying a little single prop is honestly pretty easy and a lot of fun. Last time I was in the space we were renting them for 150 $/hr wet including instructor.

A lot of little airports run mini flight schools, I highly recommend buying a couple hours to see if you're into it. If you're in something <100k it's effectively a tractor engine and some old ass analog, kinda beautiful in it's simplicity

Find a Cessna 150F and fly it. Small plane crashes are pretty easy to walk away from. Piper Cub project maybe. If your area has a Vintage Airplane Association chapter, the old guys are literally dying to pass their skills on. My dad built airplanes in our basement, Pitts s2 and then he had a luscombe 8a with rag wings. It’s so much easier than you think. The machine is so fucking simple. Flying an airplane built in the 40s or 50s is awesome.

Gotta learn to fly it. So that is whatever the cost is for gas and the instructor. Guess for $100 an hour. You’ll need to do a ground school where you learn to read maps and typical classroom work. Cost can vary wildly depending on the aircraft and fbo (fixed based operator) that you are out of. Call around and hang out where old guys are looking to fly. Canada might have a different system for your private pilot license, but should generally be the same. I cannot stress enough that vintage aviation is dying and there are old men wanting to fly and teach their skills.
You can usually get a first flight lesson at a discount. It costs money, but you don’t have to do it every month. You log an hour or two every couple of months and just stack hours. I can’t pass a medical because I have epilepsy, but would be flying these same sorts of planes. They are easier to work on than most cars.

tldr $4k for the certification and $8500 for a small, post war tail dragger.

Well, yeah, no shit, the engine is the important part. If you want a certified aircraft engine, because the FAA sucks dogshit about their requirements for that, you end up having to spend a fucking fortune.

But you don't have to spend $80K on an engine, you can build a Cri-Cri with a couple of $500 chainsaw engines powering it. It'll be categorized as "experimental" but that just means you can't fly it over downtown Manhattan until you've flown it for enough hours that the FAA is pretty sure you didn't build it out of cardboard and chewing gum.

The only time I was ever actually fucking terrified while flying was when we flew in to Oshkosh. They put you in a racetrack formation with a dozen other planes, stack these all over the sky, and then land an entire formation one behind the other at the same time on the same runway.

My father's idiot girlfriend decided to throw a full-sized paper map open across the entire windshield while we were circling around waiting for landing. It's relatively safe hobby but signals status and gives you adrenaline. You can also get good enough to deal with a typical plane within your reach within a year or so.
They could've gotten a motorcycle but they're too risk averse and you can get a machine that is far more than they could handle as newbies for relative pennies so you get no status points for it.
