Anyone who's ever been to an indoor range with other people shooting there at the same time, especially rifles, knows that the shockwave makes it a pain in the ass to shoot anyway. You can't focus on taking your own shots when there's an unpredictable, loud ass pop and a shockwave that makes you jolt.

Outdoor ranges are the way to go.

The most common bullet widths for pistols are .36 and .45

The most common bullet widths for rifles are .223 and .308

Pistols are high caliber. Rifles are low caliber.

It's not solely or exclusively a reference, in comparing the power of firearm ammunition rounds, to projectile diameter alone. Plenty of identical bullet diameters that have totally different incomparable case lengths and powder loads, with correspondingly different energy and power, compared to each other. .30 Carbine and .30-06 for example. 'High caliber' means a pistol-or-rifle round with a lot of case capacity/powder load, energy, and power.
