I think the difficulty is that stand up isn't a big enough part of BJJ or "submission grappling" training to the extent that BJJ practitioners rightfully do not want to engage in it against someone who has top level judo or wrestling under their belt. The longer they play stand up the higher risk of getting taken down into a losing position. They also know that if their opponent is an olympic judoka or some shit there's fucking zero chance of hitting a hip toss or whatever on them. There's no incentive at all to remain standing under such circumstances.

Short term I would just allow guard pulling in strict BJJ matches, on the understanding general audiences will mock butt-scooting and guard pulling. Yeah it's 'lame' but fundamentally rolling about on the floor is what BJJ is about. Long term the ideal would be that "submission grapplers" are true mixtures of BJJ, judo and wrestling to the extent everyone is happy to engage standing yet also happy when the fight goes to the ground. Feels like that is a good few years away though, if ever.

I'd argue it's the opposite, trying to widen the scope too much. Specifically the desire to ensure matches start standing and remain standing until someone lands a takedown, in a competition everyone knows is a BJJ tournament.

There needs to be rules otherwise it's no longer a specific sport. If we say "ok now you can just kick your opponent in the fucking head" then it's no longer BJJ (or any form of grappling).

What you're describing (only keeping what's useful) is the essence of modern MMA and absolutely has its utility. No one denies that that's what MMA is: taking every single thing that works in a real fight (except shit like gouging some cunt's eyes out or, ironically, kicking him in the head as he might die) and leaving the rest.

The sport of "submission grappling" has the problem that there are these huge gulfs between people's stand up and ground games. People can train 10+ years doing judo where you cannot touch your opponent's legs then other people will train BJJ spending 10+ years on a heavy leg lock game. Then they're both pitted against one another in the sport of "grappling". The problem is that the instruction needs to cover everything, and currently does not.

The US needs an equivalent of sambo. If you just train striking, then your stance is too upright, and you get too comfortable at takedown ranges. If you just train grappling, then your weight is too far forward and you're too comfortable in striking ranges. MMA is obviously the ticket, but not everyone wants to train all out or go through a bunch of classes with different styles and dogma. In principle, you’re on to something but the problem is the lack of specialized training that will leave you helpless. Jack of all trades, master of none.
Fighting is also being able to force your opponent into your field where you can dominate. A buddy of mine who is TKD 4th level blackbelt would never use it unless he had to keep multiple people at bay. A BJJ specialist would never sensibly use his skills against multiple people unless he wants to get stomped. A Muay Thai fighter one on one with a grappler or even a solid Judoka will very possibly feel a world of hurt. You do need all of them, but assuming everyone has all of them then someone who has bothered to specialize as well will inevitably trump you and win out.
You need to go deep into the different specializations and then bring them together.

i would say youre on to something, turn mma into a martial art of its own. these guys are masters at all forms of striking and ground game. teach kids reading kicks/punches and turning them into shot opportunities and counter hits, and get them doing holds/guard/guard breaks on ground. it would probably be pretty natural as different styles and thinking would turn into flowcharts. just hard to watch your kid get choked out or head kick and want them to keep going

That is something that definitely worries me. My hope is that through enough other high stimulation things they‘ll get indirectly desensitized. I‘m going with horseback riding, youth firefighting, sailing, and dance. Football (soccer) too of course.
