At the root, the word relates to drug use. It's a joke about someone on drugs not being asleep, but being "more awake than ever" because of the visions they're seeing. It's black vernacular which is succinct, to-the-point, and a poor usage of grammar.
This term became popular on black twitter to describe leftie idealism, which was often too big for them to comprehend so they would just say "that's woke" as if the concepts were blowing their mind.
Later the Breitbart oriented Conservative-inc hijacked the term and appropriated it to describe anything left wing. It became a perjorative, "woke culture", or "woke ideas" = leftist ideas that we need to defeat. Now the term is almost exclusively used by the right wing to deride left wing ideas.
