A desperate, still owned by Sinclair Broadcasting ROH put the title on him to try and stir up some chatter because of they were thinking 'OMG the underdog black manlet actually won a world title! What an unexpected surprise.' would draw the smark and progressive wrestling fan base to the watch the product. So seeing as ROH was long seen as a workrate company, Gresham thinks his name should be in the same breath as Danielson, Punk, Joe, Lethal and McGuiness and be held to the same esteem as they are.

Gresham is too small to be doing technician shit and that's saying something because it's something plenty of smaller guys do like Danielson. At a certain height you are restricted to comedy or high-flying if it's going to look the least bit convincing.

As an addendum I think Taiji Ishimori is a good example of a compromise. He's a very small technician who wrestle some heavyweights but he also throws in cheating heel tactics and high-flying into the mix in addition to working mostly in the NJPW's junior division. Gresham's style could work but he'd have to be in a company with a junior division and be wiling to put the ego aside and do the odd comedy spot against a big guy.

It literally is flippy shit though. Just with ground based choreography and tumbling instead of using the ropes.

This could be the realest looking shit in the world and it'd still be stupid. The problem isn't even that the moves look fake, it's that hundreds of these exact meaningless matches with no purpose or story happen every single week in random promotions to diminishing audiences and nobody ever stops to think "why do we keep doing this"
Like genuinely what's the fucking point of all this indie shit? AEW for all its faults always has multiple ongoing stories at a time and angles all over the show, but the indies don't even try with anything. Just wrestling for its own sake.

There's nothing wrong with this. There's an audience for it so that's why it exists. And 'storytelling' wrestling only works if the story is good and more often than not it isn't these days.

Why can't people just fake fight anymore?

The actual audience for indie wrestling is that there are locals who are fans of TV wrestling and want to see a live wrestling show they can afford. They're not there to see a black battletoad roll around on the mat. Yeah the Brits might like this stuff but this show happened in Canada.

Because short form media dominates the landscape now. Wrestlers live and die based on their ability to be recognised. You can't go viral with a 60 minute psychological Broadway. Attention spans are too low.
There's "milestones" in marketing now. The first one is 1 second. Within 1 second, the person has decided whether they are going to ignore what's in front of them. The next is 3 seconds. The next is 8 seconds. If they watch the first 8 seconds then there's a good chance they'll watch the next 5 minutes.
So any clips have to be visually interesting in the first 1-8 seconds. Which means to go viral and promote your brand then the shortest distance that that is choreographed flippy shit. This is a variant on that. The reason these finishes exist is because they want to spawn highlights which prompt discussion about the wrestlers. They weren't trying to entertain an audience.
