The standard is absolutely higher now. Twenty years ago, crowds were colder, and wrestlers were generally both more restrained and more formulaic, as well less studied in the art of wrestling. Every month, we now see at least two or three matches that'd be the MOTY if it happened before the mid '10s. Like this Cena and Cody match.

Not to mention there's more great wrestling in more of the world which is easily viewable than ever before, and the standard is now higher in all those places. It's not just one territory. That Vikingo/Gable match was just as good as Cena/Cody, and it has no chance of winning MOTY this year.
