The Punk stuff was the catalyst for people to talk shit on AEW, but it was probably brewing for a few months going into it.

They lost their way after Hangman beat Omega the first time (which was the correct call), but his reign fizzled out. It's kind of amazing, because it felt like they were on an upward trajectory AND they signed Bryan and Punk, then it just got all weird.

I like a lot of what I've seen out of them in 2025, but it's not what it used to be.

They fucked up by not capitalizing on the drama and kicking it up a notch with quality storylines backed up by legitimate heat which had created more intrigue around what would happen on the weekly shows than they ever had. Instead they just went all sissy and sesame street about it. The moment I saw them start one of the first post-brawl out dynamites by turning a red hot fired up worked shoot returning MJF angle into him cracking a couple of shitty jokes before passing the mic to fucking Stokeley, of all people, so he can his mouth on the mic for too long about some inane bullshit nobody cared about. That shit killed most of the hype I had for that company at that moment in time. Ridiculous.

it is wild, I used to go to the Pittsburgh shows until a few years ago and the crowds got smaller every time. The first show, while not sold out, was probably legit 90%+ full. Like 2 shows later the entire top tier is tarped off. Then a few shows later there are less sections on the ones left for sale. Then they leave a few by the stage empty. Remember pics of a few shows here in recent years were really bad. Coming back next month, not going again.

The hype was never genuine. Fans didn’t like AEW as much as they just hated Vince. Once Vince was gone it was over. Tony’s a shit booker but in reality there was nothing he could do.

The house style is less about creating a consistent reality of how the moves work and more of a series of obligated spots every match needs to have. This makes a show full of “great matches” unwatchable for most people cause it’s just the same shit over and over again.
50/50 offense matches don’t make stars and that’s almost every match.
Tony has one of the worst eyes for talent. Countless hours wasted on Garcia, wheeler, jungle jack, hook and Sammy. This has also killed any good will to new projects.
They’re the bad guy company too. Give the wrestlers healthcare and now that Jericho is gone let women speak their truth.
Russo style angles like a face tricking a heel into accepting a title shot. Or a wrestler letting her self get beat up and humiliated as a trick to bring back gimmick she was playing like 3 weeks ago.
Easily avoidable botches like 90% of the poisonranas or dudes straight up blading on camera.

For me the matches sucked because there was no story. Every match was "you look strong! Lets have a match!" and it bored me to tears. ROH's momentum didn't die because Davey Richard couldn't cut a promo (none of their champs, other than Punk, could until going to TNA/WWE), and it wasn't because the head bangers got brought in(to be on the losing end of like 4 squash matches). It was because ROH fans would look at potential fans with a straight face and tell them that Rhett Titus and Kenny King being pushed was actually good.

i only started watching wrestling last year and really only watch WWE.
it's hard for me to imagine that there was a world where the perception of AEW was "dynamite might outpace raw if this keeps up" when all i know is "dynamite almost never beats NXT anymore".
i guess the easy answer is "tony's booking" but i don't know enough about tony's booking to point to anything specifically. and it's not like HHH's booking has been so great as of late but WWE is of course on fire right now.
but it seems like, from what i can tell, the downfall really started in 2023 and accelerated in 2024. so, losing punk i guess was the straw that broke the camel's back.
i hope they can pull themselves together eventually. no good reason to want WWE to monopolize the north american wrestling landscape.

It killed New Japan, it killed the indy scene, it killed any notion of the sports based presentation New Japan champions with its production and camera work ever happening in North America, its sharts all over wrestling's dwindling popularity and credibility by its infantile retardation; it is fucking rotten. If all that isn't bad enough, the fan base that it has attracted and all the bleacher creatures that stink up arenas whenever they decide to show up (never) is probably the worst thing about it all. If ass wipe ever became sentient, I'm sure it would be wearing an AEW shirt.

And it sucks because I remember all the hype and momentum and fanfare of seeing what was a collaborative effort of talent betting on themselves to make a show all on their own accord just to prove they can do it. I remember the chants from the first All In and how much the crowd were digging it, just for anything new. Now AEW is what its entire fan base has: a prolapsed anus.
