I don't even think it was the spot itself but the fans coming out to defend it that did the long term damage. Same with the exploding match.
ROH's momentum didn't die because Davey Richard couldn't cut a promo (none of their champs, other than Punk, could until going to TNA/WWE), and it wasn't because the head bangers got brought in(to be on the losing end of like 4 squash matches). It was because ROH fans would look at potential fans with a straight face and tell them that Rhett Titus and Kenny King being pushed was actually good.

By the time he was in WCW he was a solid in ring performer and good promo. His first mid card WWE run was great but he was working with goats. Over time it just became incredibly obvious his idea of "reinventing" himself was yelling a bunch of shit to find catch phrases and then to run those catch phrases into the ground.
